Paris in the Fall

Posted on October 23, 2009

Sometimes I write to you about some very tough subjects, and in some ways, this hasn’t been an easy year. I wrote to you about losing my stepmother Kuniko (and so many of you wrote me such wonderful letters, thank you soooo much!!), and the loss of my son’s best friend. Tough subjects, hard losses. But the wonderful thing about life is that it is so varied. Hard things happen, and then life eases up and you have some great times. After a tough spring, » read more »

New Age

Posted on October 13, 2009

I was talking to a friend today about someone we know, and I commented that she must be turning 70. We both fell silent in shock as I said it. 70? 70! Isn’t that old? At least it used to be (when I was much younger), but the friend we were talking about is vital, youthful, beautiful, in great shape, looks sexy, wears cute clothes (I mean really cute), and at most she looks about 50. And then I realized » read more »

Art Show: Word

Posted on October 1, 2009

I wanted to share with you what a good time I recently had! As you know, I had a contemporary art gallery for four years in San Francisco. My mission was to show the work of emerging artists, artists who were essentially unknown. In an ‘art sense’, they were ‘young’ artists, but in real life not all of them were. Some were very young, some were considerably older, and all had been working on their art for many, many years, with deep commitment. They did beautiful work and my years of owning the art gallery » read more »

Anniversary

Posted on September 22, 2009

There are some tough days sometimes that you just have to live through. For my family, the hardest day of the year is the anniversary of my son Nick’s death. I am stunned every year by how hard it hits me. I used to try to tell myself that it would be okay, but there’s no way around it, » read more »

Book Cover Photos

Posted on September 14, 2009

Once my children leave after our summer vacation together (and my birthday in mid-August), I start getting organized for the fall. I begin writing again in September, in true back-to-school spirit, and I spend the last half of August, clearing things off my desk, working on the outline of the book I’ll be starting, and doing projects related to my work. And every other year, I pose for the photographs that appear on the back of my books. » read more »

“L’amour n’a pas d’age”/ Love is Timeless

Posted on September 8, 2009

Last year, I received a wedding announcement from two people I’ve known for a long time, in Paris. She must be in her 50’s and he is well into his 60’s. And the bride handwrote a little message on the wedding announcement, which said what I wrote above: Love is timeless, or ‘ageless’. It really made me smile, and I was happy for both of them. They looked so happy in the photograph that came with the announcement. » read more »

Back to Work

Posted on September 3, 2009

Well, I guess the summer is really over, and it’s back to work for me. My kids have left, back to their schools, jobs, and cities. My college kids started school. And I went back to work this weekend. I spent part of it editing a book that’s coming out next year. » read more »

Our Lady of Safe Harbour

Posted on September 1, 2009

On our travels to the South of France every year, I discovered a beautiful little church many years ago. It’s a very small 11th century church, with a 4th century chapel, and miracles are said to have happened there. There is a book where you can write your name (or that of someone you love and care about), if you wish them to pray for you, or are hoping for a miracle. » read more »

Paris Haute Couture

Posted on August 26, 2009

I’ve talked to you before about the fashion shows we go to in Paris. My three daughters who work in fashion introduced me to the excitement of the Ready to Wear shows in Paris this spring, which was new for me. And they were certainly fun, and hectic and exciting, and very different from the fashion shows I know. » read more »
