Paris Pooches

If you’re a dog lover, you’ll be happy to know that French people are crazy about their dogs!!! Dogs are welcome everywhere, and all those old cartoons of French women with a poodle on a leash are pretty much true, except that you don’t see a lot of poodles anymore!!! Sometimes it seems like everyone in Paris has a dog!!! I think the two breeds I see most often are Dachshunds (a lot of long hair and wire hair, and many miniature), and French Bull Dogs. I’ve had bad experiences personally with French Bull Dogs, so I’m less crazy about them (maybe I just had bad luck with the two I had—-one of them killed one of my son’s dog a few years ago, so that was VERY traumatic, and the other one was equally unfriendly, although a lot of people I know seem to love them and have better luck with them than we did. But we’ve had several wonderful Dachshunds, so we have a soft spot for them. The other breed you see a lot of here are Yorkshire terriers. Yorkies seem to be a big favorite everywhere, and we’ve had them in the family, and still do. My daughter’s Yorkie wore a French Maid costume on Halloween, which she hated, but she loved the bumble bee costume she wore after that!!! (Maxx’ beloved Annabelle, the Boston Bull, whom we lost this summer and miss so much, wore a Super Woman costume for Halloween last year—-WITH a blond wig!!! she hated the wig!!). But French people are just about as crazy as Americans about their dogs!!

The nice thing about having a dog in France is that they are welcome absolutely everywhere. There is nowhere you can’t take a dog. In California, you can’t take them into grocery stores or restaurants. Here, not only can you take them into the restaurant, but a lot of times, you see a dog sitting next to its master on the banquette, and the dog is nibbling something off the table (usually a treat provided by the restaurant), and no one bats an eye. At one of my favorite restaurants here, the owner has a giant bull mastiff, he wanders around, checks out what everyone is eating, and eventually, with an exhausted look, lies down in the middle of the restaurant and goes to sleep, and everyone has to step over him cautiously to get to their table or leave the restaurant. He’s totally friendly, and goes right on sleeping while people climb over him. It’s fun being able to take your dog into stores, restaurants, or anywhere you go. I really miss having my dogs in Paris, but the flight from California is just too long, I think they would hate the flight, and couldn’t stay in a tote bag for that long, so I don’t bring any of them, and really miss having them with me!!!…..I can’t remember the last time I saw a French Poodle in Paris, although I’m sure there are some, but you see mostly the breeds I mentioned, and now and then a pug.

And along the quais of the Seine River that runs through Paris are many, many pet stores, where you see puppies of all kinds. I stay away from them, or I’m sure I would wind up with another dog!!!! Dogs in Paris have a great life, and go to some of the finest restaurants in town!!! It sounds pretty silly, but sometimes it’s fun to see them, sitting there, looking very grand, as though they own the restaurant, sitting next to their owners, watching the people, and eating treats given to them by the restaurant. It’s a dog’s life——even in Paris!!!! The British and the Germans are crazy about their dogs too, but I think only French dogs go to fancy restaurants and sit on the banquette and check out the people. It’s pretty funny to see!!!

Wow! Wish more people around the world had that French attitude about dogs.

Funny here in South Africa no dogs allowed in our restaurants and most of our five star hotels but badly behaved brats are welcome everywhere! Nothing can be worse then going out for a romantic dinner and having a bunch of screeching children running around your table, and the parents nodding at how cute they are.
    Give me the dogs anyday!

That sounds wonderful about the open invitation Paris gives to their furry critters. And it makes sense; your dog is usually under the table or beside your feet at dinner time. A lovely comfort scene. : ) I’m so happy you are enjoying yourself!

Most older pubs will allow dogs in but it is becoming more less frequent unfortunately. Typically pubs still in rural areas will be fine as many locals will have their own pets and stop off on their walks for a spot to eat or drink. But in towns it is less likely to find a place where dogs are accepted.

First of all I want to say terrific blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you don’t
mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing.
I’ve had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts
out there. I do enjoy writing however it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost simply
just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips?
    Appreciate it!
