7/9/18, Paris Fashion:Haute Couture
Hi Everyone,
Every prayer for success for the boys, their rescuers, families and the entire team in Thailand as the whole world watches and prays for them.
I hope you had a terrific week, and a wonderful, fun 4th of July!!
I enjoyed one of my favorite fun past times, and went to the Chanel Haute Couture fashion show last week. I love seeing the beautiful clothes on the runway, that are really an art form. Every stitch in a Haute Couture garment is hand done, not a machine stitch anywhere, and often spectacular embroideries. Beautiful models showing beautiful clothes. Chanel is my favorite show, either Haute Couture or ready to wear, and Haute Couture is the highest art form in fashion, and a dying art, because it’s so rare, and there are so few clients for it, and so few people left with the skills to make it. (The apprenticeship time to work on Haute Couture clothes is 12 years!!). And even as a spectator, and not a buyer, I thoroughly enjoy the experience and the spectacle. Karl Lagerfeld, in his late 80’s now is still the designer for Chanel and an absolute genius, and a power house of strength, energy, foresight, and creativity. It’s always an honor to see his collections, and to see him take a bow at the end of the show. The scenery is always spectacular at any Chanel show, this time the scene was set as though it was along the river Seine, where the booksellers are who sell old books. And the models strolled past the beautiful sets and the stage set booksellers.
The show was particularly fun for me, not just because of Karl Lagerfeld’s talent, but my youngest son and his girlfriend came to the show with me, and although he is not as involved in fashion as his sisters, or at all in fact, he really enjoyed the show, the stage set, the beautiful models and amazing clothes, as fifty or sixty models pounded past him on the runway in the spectacularly beautiful clothes. Invitations to the show are hard to come by, and I was very grateful that all three of us were invited, so I could go with them. I used to take my children to the fashion shows with me when they were little, because I thought it was such a beautiful art form, and three of my daughters wound up with careers in fashion. Maxx didn’t enjoy the shows as a very little boy, but he did enjoy it this time, with his girlfriend in awe of how beautiful the clothes were, and how exquisite the workmanship!!! Fashion at that level is really a kind of art, more than anything.
Other than that, I’ve been doing more mundane things, a bit of work, a lot of family visits, some good meals, time with friends, vacation with my kids, and just enjoying the summer. I’m looking forward to time with my kids, and I hope you have some fun vacation time planned this month too.

Yes after so many decades ,Paris is still one the fashion city due to the tremendous done by famous” Haute Couturier” like Gabrielle Bonheur Coco Chanel. When We talked about Coco Chanel we need to picture an era of World war I (1914-1918) and the era after. In that period we did not have the technology luxury of today . I mean computers and the multitudes of programs.
Like you mention , in ” Haute Couture” world everything is handmade. It is very tedious and meticulous work that required a lot of concentration, discipline, perseverance and passion. You agree with me that if you do not have a passion for that work , you will give up quickly. “Haute Couture ” is an ART , I mean a GENUINE ART not a copy ; it is a craft from master like the paintings from Masters of Impressionism like Monet , Renoir, Pissaro,etc…Haute Couture is really a big deal

I hope you are well. I am getting in touch on behalf of my Mother who is one fo your biggest fans. Whether it has been birthdays or christmases, for the past 10 of 10s of years my Father has always bought her your newest book and she is the proud owner of every single one of your books, bought and read.
For her birthday this year (in October) I had hoped to plan on somehow getting her a signed copy of your newest book to complete her collection, with a special message from you. She has been through a few ups and downs this past 10 years with her health, and I know she would crumble (in a good way) at the sight of something like that.
I myself work in the music industry and through friends of friends in the book industry and will try and get through to you to see if anything is possible, but thought it was worth posting on your blog also! I would fly anywhere around the world to pick up a copy for my mother, as it will be such a special thing for her. Please let me know if anything at all is possible, however I appreciate how busy you must be.

Well, there appears to be a man named Jonathan Ball, who is a faithful son, who shops like my brother and I do for our Mom. It sounds like His Dear Mom is older, too. The only difference is, my Mom likes baking equipment, and his Mom loves your books!!?
So, I’m going to bat for him… haha. Yes, a complete stranger.
It’s because we have our Moms for only such a short time left, Danielle… And, because he’s willing to fly anywhere to pick up the book!!
I think he’s forgotten the mail system??

And, how I love your haute couture shows!!! I have a ticket to go to Paris, but I know nothing about where to stay, where is safe- I’m disabled.
But books like yours & others make me dream of Paris. I want to see the art, see the architecture, I want to eat France!!! If possible, to see somewhere that shows any haute couture fashion or history?
I used to be a scratch baker and chocolatier, and food intrigues me.
I put off going this year for lack of knowing where to stay. I tried to look online, but it was very confusing. All these arrondissements, no idea which are safe, or close?!! Et oui, je parle un peu de français, mais je ne me souviens pas beacoup. J’ai fini étudier le français a l’université il y a plus de 35 ans… et j’ai mal à le cerveau 3 fois.
